What About Vitamins?

Learning about vitamins ?

Yes, learning about vitamins can be very confusing, especially when you are trying to figure out just what type of supplements you should be taking.

We’ve all been told at one time or another, that if we ate a nutritionally balanced meal three times a day we wouldn’t need dietary supplements or need to know about vitamins, but of course, this just isn’t realistic in our society.

A huge number of us are stressed out on a routine basis, and don’t always have time to eat at all let alone a nutritionally balanced meal (and three of them?!).

How many times do you see people driving down the road trying to eat a hamburger, fries and a cola. You know that's got to be a totally nutritionally balanced meal... yea, sure.

Vitamins should never be substituted for good nutritional intake. However, if you don't eat right for whatever reasons you may need to take a vitamin supplement.

Your body needs fuel to accomplish all the tasks you have to attend to in a day.

Vitamins and minerals in many cases are the catalyst to help break-down the food we take in.

A good diet is one with plenty of calcium, protein, fats, carbohydrates, and fiber supplemented by vitamins minerals as needed for specific health concerns.

Many food items are enriched with vitamins and minerals, like breads, pastas, and cereals.

SideBar: Many times the foods we get that say "enriched" This is because the processor has removed all or most all the natural elements in the product. An example would be the rice we buy. You open the box and you find white rice. That is not the normal way rice comes out of the field. This is polished rice. It has had the outer coat removed. The outer coat is where most of your vitamins and nutrients are found. It is also known as "Brown Rice".

Information about vitamins listed on packaging includes the percentage of the daily recommended allowance of each, which will give you a pretty good idea how much you are getting of a certain vitamin or mineral.

Calcium is an important mineral for women, and most sources about vitamins

Young ladies tend to lose calcium more than men. This is espcially true when she is preganut and or when breast feeding. It takes extra calcium for the fetus to grow. When the child is born and breast feeding the mother must have extra calcium for the childs milk. If the mother does not take in enough calcium in her diet or as a supplement then the body will rob the calcium from other parts of the body, most notably from the bones. This can cause osteoporosis, (A disease in which the bones become extremely porous, are subject to fracture, and heal slowly, occurring especially in women following menopause and often leading to curvature of the spine from vertebral collapse), down the road.

Most calcium supplements only contain 30-50% of the recommended daily amounts and must be supplemented by diet intake of other sources, such as cheese, yogurt, milk, and ice cream.

About vitamin D, this is an important vitamin and is essential to bone health, and is included in some calcium supplements as well.

Vitamin D can be absorbed through the skin via sunlight as well, but for people living in northern states, or for the elderly, this is not always an option, therefore a vitamin supplement is the answer.
